Clinical Chaos is a significant sequel to the author s previous book in this series, Archetypes and Strange Attractors The Chaotic World of Symbols. With multiple case examples showing how theory may appear or be applied in the consulting room, Clinical Chaos is not only the first book on the subject, but quite simply the most important contribution to the logistics of trauma ever written from a Jungian perspective.
John Van Eenwyk s in-depth knowledge of trauma, gleaned from forty years of analytic experience, shines through in this book, as does his compassion for the formidable challenges we all face on our journey of individuation.

What an Appealing Book! Don't be afraid of it, it's a great read.
For any mental health professional, especially the therapist or counselor; for the scholar or researcher; medical personnel, and not least, for any interested person who has been beset with past harmful experiences either out of the ordinary or systematic nature. The author assures these are a part of nearly all of us. Its appeal lies in its lucidity, intellectual challenge, technical acuity, sheer creativity, warmth and wittiness, all presented with a human touch that shines through on every page.

I enjoyed his clear elucidation of Chaos Theory and it's application to how people behave. This is of great explanatory value, and the best marriage of science to human complexity I have ever read. His chapter on autoimmune disease stands alone in its potential to unravel the puzzling nature of somatoform disorders. With any patience the science itself is readily grasped.

It's best virtue, and one I am professionally grateful for, is the practical, useful methodology it provides to the encounter with those who suffer from childhood physical and emotional distress. In my opinion this is the most complete and humane approach to trauma of all the currently available methods (e.g. CBT, EMDR, exposure, etc.). (Dr. Van Eenwyk, is internationally known for his trauma therapy even as it is occurring.).

Overall this is a work to be treasured as a major contribution to the practice of trauma related treatment, whether that trauma is manifested in horrific events or the more often routine, extended, and thus more powerful life experience. The author makes the potential relief of this distress accessible to practitioners and sufferers alike. If you are one of those read it, you'll be glad you did.

Clinical Chaos John R Van Eenwyk 9781894574372 Books Reviews

This is the best psychotherapy book dealing with trauma which I have read in two decades. With degrees from the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich and the University of Chicago, Van Eenwyk also has decades of experience both treating trauma survivors and teaching others to work with survivors. This book adds valuable insight into combining depth psychology and neuroscience in order to move clients beyond the defensive blocks that often stymie trauma recovery. To set the stage, he gives us the basics of archetypes, chaos theory, the paradox of defenses, and synaptic biochemistry. In the second half of the book, he puts it all into perspective by relating theory to practice with case studies that demonstrate his ideas.

There's plenty of cutting-edge science for those who are interested in that. For those who aren't, there is metaphor and analogy to make everyday sense of it all. The bottom line is that in order to facilitate trauma recovery, the conscious mind and the unconscious mind need to be working in harmony instead of at cross purposes. It's a simple agenda but one which is highly complex to execute. Van Eenwyk has given us a very understandable and comprehensive roadmap for navigating that tricky terrain.
